Break it down one time.

People sometimes like to impose the "expert" label on us and it's something we've always resisted for a lot of reasons, foremost among them being the entire raison d'ĂȘtre for this blog: entertainment value. The minute we become "experts," the fun gets sucked right out of it. We'd much rather spend our time ripping on overpaid and self-important celebrities wearing really expensive borrowed clothes and fucking it up than educating people on the "correct" way to dress. Besides, we're not so much experts as we are good at breaking things down visually and explaining why we think they do or don't work. And we like to think we have taste and style to go along with that. Why are we telling you this (aside from loving to talk about ourselves)? Because we had an immediate and vehement negative reaction to this look. We believe the words "SWEET JESUS, NO!" were shrieked. But then a curious thing happened: we couldn't explain WHY this wasn't working for us. It literally took us a good half hour to break this one down. Even then, the assessment comes down to "This is not the dress for her."

Granted, we think a dress like this is only really going to work on a handful of types. It's fairly referential of a specific period of dress - late '70s to early '80s, with a '40s influence - and it's one of those styles that passed pretty quickly into "frumpy" in the eyes of most people. Eva's not doing much here to change people's minds. She's a gorgeous woman, but we're thinking her full-lipped, big hair, bodacious bod look is all wrong for this dress. Her heavy shoes don't help the look, nor does her cocker-spaniel hair. Short hair or an up 'do is what this dress requires. This dress needs a Tilda or a Cate to pull it off, possibly a Zoe. It needs someone with an edge to them who can make the plainest clothes look stunning and dramatic. This is not a dress that would take well to accessories. When a woman wears this, she's wearing only this, and she better be prepared to work it.
